Alexis Clairaut (1713-1765)

Chronologie de la vie de Clairaut (1713-1765)

30 juin 1754 (1) : Clairaut (Hampton Court, Middlesex) écrit à Thomas Birch :
As I was perusing the last volume of the Philosophical Transactions, I fell upon a Memoir of Mr Melvil [(Melvil 53)], the subject of which having handled in a book [(Courtivron 52)], that I presented some time ago to the Royal Society [cf. 7 décembre 1752 (1)], from a friend of mine, and written upon a matter, which I had formerly studied myself, I first examined whether any notice had been taken of the things common to both of the works, and to what degree the two authors agreed together.

[...]

P. S. I shall take this opportunity of intreating [?] you to favour Mr le M[arqu]is de Courtivron in his desire of becoming one of the member of the R. S. You and some other gentlemen promised me last year to serve him but my business in France having forced me away from you sooner than I expected, I could not profit of your favourable dispositions. For fear of the same event this year, I beseech you [déchirure] up a certificate and propose the signing of it to those [déchirure] conversant in mathematicks, as Mr Short, Mr Simpson [déchirure], Robertson etc. and other gentlemen you think proper.

I have another favour to beg, [just] in case you judge the precedent reflections worth the reading in your next reading, to mend the most faults of my style (RS, LP II 526).
Il s'agit de « A letter from Monsieur Clairaut, member of the Royal Society of Sciences of Paris, and F. R. S to Thomas Birch D. D. Secret. R. S. containing a Comparison between the Notions of M. de Courtivron and Mr Melvil, concerning the Difference of Refrangibility of the Ray of Light », Philosophical Transactions, vol.
